This three-part series tells the reality of climate change and offers innovative solutions to protect our future.
This defining decade requires unprecedented action to address humanity’s greatest challenges. With global access, this three-part series explores the true impact of climate change on our civilization for the remainder of the 21st century and beyond.
Irish journalist Philip Boucher-Hayes explores climate hotspots, from melting glaciers in Greenland to extreme weather in sub-Saharan Africa, from flooding of farmland in Bangladesh to melting permafrost in Siberia. He meets experts and witnesses who explain the interconnectedness of the world’s fragile ecology as we reach a tipping point that may be no return.
The series looks at new climate science and confronts the harsh realities of a changing world—with ecosystem collapse, ocean death, and escalating extreme weather phenomena. But it also explores positive visions for reimagining economies, landscapes and infrastructure, as well as practical solutions, ways to mobilize collective resolve, and ways to challenge humanity to become a force for change, harnessing innovation to safeguard the future of civilization.
The first episode, “Into the Storm,” highlights the immediate and escalating impacts of climate change. It was released in Ireland, where extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common. In Greenland, it explores the potentially devastating consequences of rapid melting of the ice sheet – rising sea levels and disruption of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), the Atlantic’s main current system. It also touches on the impact of climate change in Malawi and Siberia, a grim picture of widespread damage.
The second episode, “Swimming the Current,” focuses on adaptation strategies. It explores how countries and communities are responding to rising sea levels, increased flooding and more frequent droughts. The Netherlands is an example of proactive adaptation, proposing innovative solutions such as sea barriers and climate-resilient infrastructure. This episode also explores the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities in Wales, Bangladesh and Florida.
Episode three, “Decarbonizing the Global Economy,” addresses the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels. It starts with the world’s reliance on carbon-based energy and then explores ways to a cleaner, more sustainable future. It traveled to Ukraine, the United States, Sweden, Finland and Florida to showcase a range of decarbonisation methods.
Throughout the series, experts from diverse fields provide insights into the latest climate science and potential solutions. The series aims to challenge viewers to confront the reality of climate change while also inspiring collective action. It emphasizes the need for bold policies, innovative technologies and personal responsibility to safeguard the future of our planet.
