Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said at a news conference that the shooting suspect was 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur, who was also shot by a police officer during the incident.
Andrews was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. Upon his release from the hospital, he will be transferred to the county jail.
The shootout occurred Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that two officers responded to the Holiday Inn Express in South Carolina following a report that someone had fraudulently used their credit card at the hotel. The agency said officers spoke with the front desk clerk, who told them the room was rented by Andrews.
After learning that Andrews had an active warrant from DeKalb County for failure to appear in court, police went to the hotel room and arrested him, according to the agency.
McClure said the suspect greeted officers at the door of his room and invited them inside.
“They started discussing the scene or incident with him,” McClure said. “At some point the suspect produced a handgun and fired at our Gwinnett County police officers for no apparent reason.”

Andrews is charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a public safety officer and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which typically handles shootings involving police officers in the Peach State, is handling the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review, the agency said.
