Gardners Candies recalls Cappuccino Meltaway bars due to undeclared allergens


Gardners Candies is recalling some Meltaway cappuccino bars because their packaging lacks a nut disclaimer.

The recalled 1.25-ounce packages of candy “may contain undeclared nuts (cashews),” said an announcement from the Pennsylvania-based company released Friday by the FDA.

the memory comes “after it was discovered that the product containing nuts was distributed in packaging that did not disclose the presence of nuts,” Gardners Candies said in the notice.

The Cappuccino Meltaway bars subject to the recall have lot number #082725 and an expiration date of 08/27/25.

Gardners Candies said the recalled products were part of Meltaway Treat Boxes containing a variety of flavors with lot number 101625 or 112525.

People who are allergic or highly sensitive to nuts “are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” if they eat the recalled Meltaway Cappuccino bars, according to the notice.

Nut allergies are “among the most common food allergies in both children and adults”, seconds the Food Allergy Research and Education organization.

The affected Gardners Candies product has not caused any illness to date, according to the recall notice.

Gardners Candies said consumers who bought the recalled Meltaway or Meltaway Treat boxes of Cappuccino should contact them for a replacement.

They were sold in stores and by mail nationwide beginning in September, according to the recall notice.

The FDA said the company linked the problem to a “temporary disruption of the company’s production and packaging processes.” According to the notice, it has stopped production of Cappuccino Meltaway Bars “until the company is certain that the problem has been corrected.”

Gardners Caramels dates back to the late 1800s. It has stores in several cities in Pennsylvania and also sells its candy to more than 100 retailers in three states, according to its website.
