Fundora defends title against the man who made him champion

The WBC junior middleweight title fight between Sebastian Fundora and Keith Thurman has finally been set for a new date, bringing back a showdown that felt like a ghost two years ago.

Thurman was originally slated to face Tim Tszyu back in 2024, but was sidelined due to injury. Fundola seized the opportunity, stepped in on short notice, and won the WBC and WBO belts. It’s crazy to think that Fundora is now defending his title and it was his misfortune that made him the champion.

Premier Boxing Champions has confirmed that the event will take place on March 28, 2026 at the MGM Grand and air on Prime Video PPV. The project was originally scheduled to be completed last October but was delayed due to Fundora’s hand injury.

Thurman has been very sparse recently, but he’s coming into this title shot. He has competed just four times since 2017. His only game appearance since 2022 came in 2025 after an absence of nearly three years. It’s hard to know what “One Time” has left at this point in his career, as his last opponent, Brock Jarvis, wasn’t enough to prove whether Thurman is still a top-tier boxer.

Positioning it as a pay-per-view headliner is a bold move that puts more focus on Thurman’s name than what he’s been doing in recent years. Although he is ranked No. 3 by the WBC, he has fought only once since 2019.

Although this was delayed, the remaining 154-pounders did not wait. Interim champions and young contenders have been making moves, making the junior middleweight division one of the hottest segments in the sport. Fundora’s defense of Thurman appears to be a necessary step in resolving old debts, but it will certainly pause the momentum for a split that is already continuing to build.

With injuries healed and a date set, Fundola can finally close this chapter. While the timing and price tag raise a lot of questions, it’s a long-standing open question.
