France’s new prime minister François Bayrou has named Eric Lombard, head of the state-backed financial group Caisse des Dépôts, as finance minister, giving him the key task of trying to craft a budget for next year.
Bayrou’s predecessor, Michel Barnier, was expelled from the French parliament in a vote of no confidence earlier this month due to opposition from left and far-right political parties to his deficit-cutting budget.
The members of Bayrou’s cabinet were unveiled on Monday night after days of wrangling between him and President Emmanuel Macron, who officially names ministers following the chief’s recommendations.
