Former British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson has resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor Party after further revelations about his relationship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, British media reported.
Reports on Sunday said Mandelson was fired from his post as London’s top representative in Washington last year after emails emerged detailing his ties to Epstein. Mandelson said he had resigned to avoid further embarrassment to the ruling party.
“This weekend I was understandably further associated with the outrage surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, which I regret and regret,” Mandelson said in a letter reported by the BBC and the Guardian.
Mandelson said he believed reports over the weekend that he received several payments from Epstein in the early 2000s were false but that he needed to investigate.
“In doing so, I do not wish to cause further embarrassment to the Labor Party and will therefore resign as a member of the Labor Party,” Mandelson reportedly said.
