Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar links Rohit Sharma’s poor batting form in Border-Gavaskar Trophy which the team won last year T20 World Cup 2024 linked. He feels the dragging effect of India’s title win is still evident and it is affecting Rohit’s batting.

Rohit Sharma had a poor showing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scoring just 31 runs in three Tests at an average of 6.20. He comes into the series after a disappointing home Test season in which he scored just 133 runs in 10 innings at an average of 13.30.

His poor form affected India’s performance as the team needed him to score runs and show experience in tough conditions in Australia. Hence, there is speculation that he will retire from the longest game.

Rohit Sharma underperforms as India wins T20 World Cup 2024 – Sanjay Bangar

Speaking on Star Sports show Follow the Blues, Sanjay Bangar spoke about Rohit Sharma’s worrying form. Bangal claimed that when captains and teams win major titles, their form tends to dip.

He cited the example of India’s World Cup victory in 1983, when the team defeated the same opponents in the series before being defeated by the West Indies. He also cited the example of 2011, when the team went through a rough patch after a landmark victory.

“This happens when any captain wins a World Cup, be it T20 or ODI. I will remind you of the 1983 World Cup, Kapil Dev’s team beat West Indies and then West Indies came to India and Defeated them,” Bangal observed.

“In 2011 we won the 50-over World Cup and from 2011 to 2013 it was a really bad time. The slight drag effect of the early moments is probably still there and something like this happens once or twice over the decades. So it’s A slight drag effect?” he argued.

Sanjay Bangar hopes Rohit Sharma returns to domestic cricket

There has been a lot of talk about Rohit Sharma returning to domestic cricket to regain his red-ball form. Sanjay Bangar suggested Rohit Sharma to follow the path of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara and play domestic cricket.

“Playing domestic cricket was discussed a lot. (Cheteshwar) Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were also dropped, and they were neither smaller nor taller than Rohit Sharma. Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara were sweating it out on the dusty ground even today. He’s going to have to show that hunger,” Bangal said.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been regulars in domestic cricket since being dropped from the national team. Pujara has also played in domestic cricket. Rahane was in hot form recently in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Rohit Sharma has continued his lean form in Test cricket since India won the 2024 T20 World Cup. Since winning the title, Rohit has scored just 164 runs in eight Tests at an average of 10.93.

After India won the T20 World Cup, he retired from the T20I format but remained an active player in Tests and ODIs. Rohit has also played three ODIs since India won the T20 World Cup, in which he has scored 157 runs at an average of 52.33 and a strike rate of 141.44.
