Philadelphia continued to struggle Saturday, losing 3-2 in overtime to Los Angeles Kings. That sparked fierce criticism of Flyers coach Rick Tocchet from frustrated fans.
The loss was Philadelphia’s fourth straight and extended its skid to 11 of its last 13 games. After the game, Flyers fans took to social media to express their displeasure. Some have called for Tocchet to be fired, while others have questioned the organization’s leadership and compared it to other sports that have long struggled.
“Fire this guy,” one fan wrote.
“This organization is a complete waste of time. They will soon be the Cleveland Browns of the NHL,” one fan explain.
Some fans have questioned Tocchet’s approach to training and player development. Others pointed to what they saw as nepotism in the hiring process.
“He keeps blaming it on practice time. But always gets ripped off by teams who also have limited practice time. Seriously cut ties. Call Brad Shaw. Let’s find someone who doesn’t hate the youth,” another fan wrote.
“Come on, Danny, take action. Tocchet is clearly not a talented coach,” One fan commented.
“Never has a coach revealed his true identity so quickly. Rick Tocchet is not a good NHL head coach, and Rick Tocchet is not a decent NHL head coach. He is a former Flyer and a friend of Danny Breer and Keith Jones, which is the only reason he is a head coach. GFY Flyers!” a fan tweeted.
“One of the worst coaches in the league. Gambling fraud and a dinosaur in the game. Doesn’t know how to use offensive players. He also gives up when the going gets tough,” said another fan.
Flyers forward Travis Konecny hit the post on a breakaway chance, and Kings forward Quinton Byfield scored the winning goal at 2:48 of overtime. Although Konecny and Trevor ZegrasPhiladelphia was unable to withstand a two-goal performance from Adrian Kempe.
The Flyers (23-17-8) are firmly in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division.
Rick Tocchet joins Flyers in May
Rick Tocchet was just a few months into his tenure as Flyers coach when his frustration boiled over. He was hired on May 14, becoming the 25th head coach in team history. Tocchet reportedly signed a five-year contract that makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NHL.
He joins Philadelphia with impressive credentials, having won 2024 Jack Adams Award for his work with the Vancouver Canucks. The recruitment was also a homecoming for Tocchet. He spent 11 of 18 NHL seasons with the Flyers and was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.
Tocchet replaced John Tortorella after he was fired on March 27. The team hopes he can end a playoff drought and develop young talent, especially highly regarded rookie Matvey Michkov.
Philadelphia looks to end its losing streak against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. The Flyers are also working to salvage the remainder of their season and restore the confidence of frustrated fans.
