Brazil and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior was named FIFA Men’s Player of the Year in Doha on Tuesday, while Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati won the women’s award for the second consecutive year.
Vinicius made 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring 24 goals as Real Madrid won the La Liga and Champions League double and scored in the Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund.
The Brazilian won the award ahead of Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri and his Real Madrid team-mate Jude Bellingham of England.
The 24-year-old, who narrowly missed out on the Ballon d’Or to Rodri in October, was in Doha to receive his award and was in Qatar with Real for Wednesday’s FIFA Continental Cup final against Mexico’s Pachuca.
“When I was playing barefoot in the streets of San Goncalo it seemed impossible, but now I’m here,” Vinicius said.
Bomati retains the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year award ahead of Zambia’s Barbara Banda and Norway’s Caroline Graham Hansen and won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the second consecutive year in October award.
The 26-year-old helped the club win a domestic treble last season, in which Barca also defended their Champions League title, while Bomati scored in the semi-finals and final of Spain’s Nations League win in February.
