FDA raises Costco egg recall to highest risk level over salmonella fears

Hundreds of thousands of eggs were sold at Costcos part of a retreat issued last month have a “reasonable” likelihood that consumption could cause serious health problems or death, due to being contaminated with salmonella, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On Friday, the FDA slapped Handsome Brook Farms eggs sold at Costco stores in the southeastern United States with the highest risk level of Category 1.

Category 1, the FDA notes on its site, means there is a recall where there is “a reasonable likelihood that use of or exposure to an offending product will result in serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Last month, more than 10,000 egg cartons were sold Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand they were voluntarily recalled out of concern that they might be contaminated with salmonella, even though no one at the time had been sickened by the potentially dirty eggs.

The eggs were sold in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee at 25 Costco stores starting November 22, 2024.

Handsome Brook Farms initiated the recall after determining that eggs “not intended for retail distribution were packaged and distributed in retail containers.”

“Additional controls and supply chain recycling are being put in place to prevent this from happening again,” the company said.
