Justin Rose leads by four strokes midway through the Farmers Insurance Open and is looking for a second win at Torrey Pines.

The 45-year-old Englishman opened with a 62 on the North Course and a 7-under 65 on the more difficult South Course for a total of 17 under.

After a 15-foot birdie on the third hole, Ryder Cup star Rose made an eagle from 8 feet on the sixth hole, and then took advantage on the eighth and ninth holes.

After losing the ball on the 12th hole, Rose had birdies on the 13th, 17th and final holes. Four points ahead of Ireland’s Seamus Power.

“I knew I was going to have a good lead (but) I thought to myself, this isn’t going to change the way you play this golf course,” Ross said. “You have to respect.

“I feel like last year was a good step in the right direction with confidence. I wanted to finish runner-up at the Troon Open in 2024 and I feel like the way I played on Sunday was the right way and I could have won there if lady luck was on my side.

“It’s the same thing with the (2025) Masters – that one killed me on Saturday, but I play golf to win that tournament. I feel like I’m at my best at the right moment.

“I’m chasing goals, I’m chasing grand slams, I’m chasing great achievements, but I’m also chasing great memories.

“I’ve been doing it for a long time and it’s only when I’m having fun doing it and putting myself in some interesting situations that I really want to keep doing it, and that’s what we’re doing now.”

Ball shot a 66 to reach 13 under, with Americans Joel Dahmen and Max McGreevy tied for third at 11 under.

Brooks Koepka returns to PGA TourAfter shooting a 68 in the first round, he improved by 5 strokes and finished at 3 under par.

After Koepka agreed to be released from his contract with the breakout LIV Golf Series in Saudi Arabia a year early at the end of the 2025 season, the PGA Tour launched a hastily crafted return-to-membership program to get the five-time major champion back.

“I thought I played well,” Koepka said. “Sixty-eight was the worst score I’ve ever shot today. Probably 64 or 65.

“There are still two rounds to go and I’m excited about it.

“I’ve never been congratulated so much for making the cut before. It feels good and I hope to be able to play two more days and challenge myself and see where I stand.”

The longest streak of cuts on the PGA Tour also ended, with Xander Schauffele failing to make the weekend for the first time in 73 events – a streak dating back to the 2022 Masters.

Schauffele failed to advance to his home state of all places.

“I don’t like missing cuts — and I think my record shows that,” Schauffele said.

“But honestly, if I were to pick one place, this is actually pretty good. I get to hang out with my family… All in all, it’s probably the biggest thing to miss.”
