Fabio WadleyThe first defense of the world title looks set to be against a domestic rival.
Wardley became the WBO heavyweight champion late last year after being promoted from provisional status when Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt rather than face the Ipswich man’s mandatory challenge.
2025 was a very successful year for Wardley, who scored his first stoppage win over Justis Huni in June, followed by an upset win over Joseph Parker in October.
Wardley has been linked with a long list of opponents since becoming champion, including the likes of Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora, but it appears another Briton has won the challenge for world honors.
DAZN first reported Daniel Dubois was set to face Wardley earlier this week and now According to Ariel Helwanithe battle has been “done”.
“Breaking News: Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois for the WBO world heavyweight title is set to be finalized on May 9, according to multiple sources. The fight will take place in the United Kingdom. The location is still to be determined.”
“Ring” magazine later stated that The match will be held in Manchester.
“Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois are finalizing a deal to fight for the WBO heavyweight title on May 9 in Manchester, England, sources tell The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.”
Dubois is a former IBF heavyweight champion with wins over the likes of Anthony Joshua, Filip Hurgovich and Jarrell Miller, but he fell short of the undisputed honor against Usyk last July.
That was the last time Dubois stepped into the ring, after initially leaving trainer Don Charles to join Tony Sims. He once again joins forces with his old coach for the upcoming challenge.
