Sky Sports News understands Everton bosses are reviewing the job of manager Sean Dyche and weighing up the next steps following the club’s defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.
New owners Friedkin Group have been conducting reviews since the final whistle at the weekend, leaving Everton with just one win in their past 11 games and one point above the relegation zone in 16th.
It’s been 18 days since the Friedkin Group took over and while their initial plan was to bring stability to the club, the results have forced a review of the current set-up.
Everton, the second-lowest goalscoring team in the Premier League this season, went without a goal for an 11th game in a row against Bournemouth, while the Toffees didn’t even score a goal at the Vitality Stadium. No foot shots.
Analysis: Dyche’s result not good enough
Alan Myers, Sky Sports News:
The long, snowy trip home from the south coast on Saturday night was just another blow for bewildered Everton fans who have been suffering since Sean Dyche’s The team continues to approach the relegation zone.
Dyche’s post-match comments added to fans’ worries about the future, with the former Burnley boss saying his side’s recent run of one win in 12 games “doesn’t look good on paper if there are a couple of wins.” Oops”.
Of course, the Blues boss was referring to the number of draws in that game, perhaps some of which have been converted into wins. But now Everton fans don’t want to hear this, they want results and they’ve had enough.
More importantly, however, the new owner, the Friedkin Group, didn’t want to hear it. They took over the club before Christmas and had no intention of dealing with the situation so quickly during their tenure. They had hoped to maintain some consistency and move up to a relatively safe position in the table, allowing for a more cautious assessment at the end of the season.
My understanding is that since the final whistle at the Vitality Stadium, an evaluation process has been underway to assess the performance of the manager and the next steps to be taken.
TFG’s performance in Roma showed they won’t shy away from making big decisions and how they handle the situation will be a clear indication to Everton fans how they intend to proceed.
The club has been paralyzed over the past two years due to the whole takeover saga, and while there’s been a lot of great work done behind the scenes, there’s still a huge amount of work to be done to start the process of bringing that much forward.
Dyche himself has had to deal with a lot more than most managers in the Premier League, including points deductions, huge financial constraints, boardroom changes and many other factors, and he’s faced them all.
However, he knows results ultimately determine whether you sink or sink as a manager, and frankly, results aren’t good enough. Everton are once again facing a relegation battle and will move to a new stadium next season. Playing in the Championship is not an option for the new club.
So, what might happen if TFG decides to change their coach? I believe they would want someone who is ready and waiting to take the job. They have no time to negotiate, so I would see a short-term option in Thursday’s FA Cup tie against Peterborough, with a more permanent solution preparing for the next game against Aston Villa at Goodison Park Premier League match.
former manager david moyes Last week he said he would have no interest in joining the club in a relegation battle, so that looks unlikely.
Graham Potter The name has been dormant for a while, but he has strong links to the job and fits the criteria. If he’s the front-runner, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if the Friedkin group pushes Dyche’s buttons.
Whatever happens, there’s likely to be a lot going on at the club over the next few days, as the club has hosted more events than an 18-30 holiday in the last few years!
Everton’s terrible stats
Everton’s main problem this season has been scoring goals. They are the second-lowest goalscoring team in the Premier League this season with 15 goals, only more than bottom-placed Southampton.
Their shot conversion rate is below seven percent – but it’s not just their shooting that’s a problem. They also rank lower in shot attempts and quality of chances created.
These problems have been particularly evident in the past two months – Everton have only scored once in open play since the start of November. They failed to score in eight of their 10 Premier League games during this period.
Overall, they have failed to score in 11 of 19 games this season, the worst record in the division.
Their defeat to Bournemouth was the second time this season that they failed to have a shot on target – again their worst record in the Premier League.
For Dyche, it’s shocking that Everton’s points return so far this season – just three wins from 19 games – has been on par with his predecessors Rafael Benitez and Frank Lang. Parde has had similar starts in 2021/22 and 2022/23, with both continuing to be sacked around this stage of the campaign.
