Errol Spence selects Tim Tszyu to return

Errol Spence Jr. selected Tim Tszyu for his long-awaited return, a choice that speaks more to uncertainty than ambition. The fight, scheduled for the summer of 2026, will be Spence’s first since losing to Terrence Crawford in July 2023, after nearly three years away from boxing. The regression is real. The confidence behind it is harder to find.

Spence will be 36 when he returns. His last two fights, against Crawford and Yordenis Ugas, stripped him of the edge he once relied on. He’s slower to initiate attacks, slower to regain position, and less able to hold his ground when the game turns physical. Those fights ended his welterweight run, but didn’t answer whether the erosion was temporary or permanent.

The reward is determined

Prolonged absences only exacerbate the problem. Long breaks can be unforgiving, especially for pressure fighters whose success depends on timing, balance and confidence in their legs. Spencer’s best performances have always come from steady forward movement and sustained body attack. If this foundation is compromised, even slightly, the style will no longer perform as well as it once did.

Tszyu is not the stable opponent the pairing would suggest. Since losing to Sebastian Fundora in March 2024 and later to Bakhram Murtazaliev, his career has veered off course. He’s still dangerous, but the idea of Tszyu as a guaranteed pressure-breaker no longer holds water. Australia plan to make adjustments and the match itself is expected to be played between 147 and 154, posing a risk to the pair.

This is where the pairings become revealing. This is not a safe reintroduction or soft reboot. This is something the two fighters are trying to confirm that time has challenged. Tszyu’s right hand can still change the fight quickly. Spence’s physical work only matters if he can maintain it long enough to apply it.

This return did not restore Spencer’s status. It tests whether it still exists. If he looks strong, the conversation will start again. If he doesn’t, there’s no room to hide behind timing or inactivity. A battle is taking place. The rest of Spencer’s life is still up in the air.
