former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. He’s become a familiar face on the sidelines in recent weeks, and last night he called the main event between Isaac Cruz and Lamont Roach Jr. at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
The Dallas native was also on hand for Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s win over Erickson Lubin last month — a more decisive finish than last month’s Isaac Cruz vs. Lamont Roach Jr. ended in a majority draw.
Roach made his second weight jump of the year with a record of 25-1-3 (10 KOs) in the WBC Super Lightweight Interim Tournament. The former WBA featherweight champion previously moved to super featherweight, and his challenge to Gervonta Davis also ended in a draw.
Roach was eliminated early but came on strong before appearing frustrated, telling Prime Video’s Brian Custer that the judges’ decision was “bullshit.”
Spence, who has been out of the ring for more than two years and has never suffered a draw in his 29-fight career, gave his thoughts on the Cruz-Roach verdict battle center tv.
“It was a good fight. Cruz lived up to his nickname ‘The Bulldog,’ coming forward and throwing a lot of punches. Lamont tried to stay focused. It was a great fight. I was close. I did think Cruz was a little bit ahead, but Lamont kept his cool and it was a great fight. Hopefully they can get another fight, another fight.”
Roach moved up to super lightweight nine months after moving up to lightweight, prompting the WBA to strip him of his super featherweight title. The belt has now been awarded to the British Jezza Dickensthe former interim champion.
Both “Pitbull” and “The Reaper” said after the game that they were willing to rematch immediately.
