Enzo Maresca refused to criticize the decision to award a controversial penalty to Ipswich Town in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat on Monday.
The excellent Liam Delap fell to the ground in the first half after a collision with stand-in goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who appeared to be reeling from the challenge, and was stunned when VAR refused to overrule the original on-field decision.
“The referee’s call for a foul by Jorgensen on Delap was scrutinized and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty,” a Premier League statement read.
Maresca declared Chelsea The players were not impressed but urged their team to move quickly.
“They (the players) said it was a bit soft but we have to admit it was a penalty,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference.
Delap, who dusted himself off to complete a perfect low effort in an overall sensational performance, insisted he felt enough contact to go to ground.
“I don’t know what clipped me but something happened,” he said. “I had already tried to get to (Jørgensen) there and he was coming out fast so I knew if I didn’t get around him he was going to touch me.
“We had three or four chances where we didn’t have a penalty that we probably deserved so well we got it and put it in the back of the net. I’ve practiced them a million times so just aim for the corner. And put it there. .”
