Emma Raducanu has split from coach Francis Roig after just six months with Espanyol.

Raducanu’s decision comes a week after she withdrew from the second round of the Australian Open, saying she wanted to play “differently”.

The 23-year-old confirmed her split from Rafael Nadal’s former coach Roig in a post on Instagram on Thursday.

Raducanu wrote: “Francis, thank you for the time you spent with us. You are more than just a coach to me and I will cherish the many good times we spent together on the court.”

“While we have collectively come to the conclusion that we should not move forward, please know that I deeply appreciate everything you have taught me and have loved the time we have spent together.”

Since her stunning victory at the 2021 U.S. Open, Raducanu has been plagued by injuries and frequent coaching changes that have prevented her from establishing herself in the women’s game.

She excelled while working alongside Andy Murray’s former coach Mark Page on a temporary arrangement at the start of 2025, but Roeg was hired in August as she searched for a new permanent fixture.

Raducanu’s results under Roig were extremely disappointing as she failed to win more than two games in any of the competitions they entered during their partnership.

Roig worked with Nadal’s uncle Toni for much of the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s career before becoming part of Matteo Berrettini’s team.

Raducanu expected to compete in Romania’s Transylvania Open next week, live Sky Sports Tennis.

It remains to be seen whether the Englishman has overcome the injury issues that have kept him out of action for more than two months before the start of the new season.

Roig is the ninth coach to leave since Raducanu won the 2021 U.S. Open.

Asked about her plans after the Australian Open, she said: “I think I’ll take a few days home and try to re-evaluate my game.

“Looking back and seeing where I can improve. How I felt and what was evident visually. I definitely want to feel better on some shots before I start racing again.

“I want to play a different way and I think the inconsistency between how I’m playing now and how I want to play is something I want to address.

“At the end of the day, I just want to hit the ball hard into the corner. I feel like I’m doing all sorts of things, but it’s not going the way I want it to. I need to work on playing in a way that’s more similar to when I was younger.”

“I think she’s spent a lot of time in her young career re-evaluating. On the one hand, that explains why she’s been through so many coaches and why she’s been criticized for it.

“It’s typical of Raducanu that she wants to constantly re-evaluate and figure out what’s best for her on and around tennis. That challenge continues and to some extent it’s a struggle because finding the right balance is very difficult, but I think she’s slowly getting there, not in terms of her Grand Slam results but in terms of the re-evaluation process.
