The attack comes amid fears of renewed conflict following clashes between government forces and Tigrayan forces.

A drone strike in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region killed one person and injured another, a senior Tigray official and a humanitarian worker said, in another sign of renewed conflict between regional and federal forces.

Tigray officials said on Saturday that drones struck two Isuzu trucks near Entiko and Gendebuta, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) apart.

The official said the Ethiopian Defense Forces carried out the attack, but provided no evidence.

A local humanitarian worker confirmed the attack. Both asked not to be named, Reuters reported.

It’s unclear what was on the truck.

TPLF-affiliated news outlet Dimtsi Weyane posted photos on Facebook that it said showed trucks damaged during the strike. The trucks were said to be transporting food and cooking utensils.

Pro-government activists posted on social media that the trucks were carrying weapons.

Ethiopia’s national army fought two years of fighting against Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters until late 2022, a war that researchers say has killed hundreds of thousands of people through direct violence, collapsed health care and famine.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front controlled all of Ethiopia and was later replaced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Addis Ababa accused the group of building ties with neighboring Eritrea and “actively preparing for war against Ethiopia.”

Earlier this week, national carrier Ethiopian Airlines canceled flights to Tigray, prompting local residents to try to withdraw cash from banks.

The war in Tigray ended in 2022, but disagreements continue over a range of issues, including the disputed territory in western Tigray and the delayed disarmament of Tigray’s military.

The province has also been affected by U.S. President Donald Trump’s cuts last year to funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), once Ethiopia’s largest source of humanitarian aid.

Humanitarian organizations say up to 80% of the population needs emergency support, while funding shortfalls are putting pressure on health systems.

African Union Chairman Mahmoud Ali Yusuf Friday urge All parties “exercise maximum restraint” and “resolve all outstanding issues through constructive dialogue.”

He stressed the importance of safeguarding “the hard-won gains of the AU-led permanent cessation of hostilities agreement (COHA)”, signed in Pretoria in 2022.
