A few days ago, a Redditor posted in the community for DoorDash drivers who receive an offer to close the car door on Waymo. The job pays a guaranteed fee of $6.25 with an additional $5 on top of it after DoorDasher verifies that it has been completed. Waymo confirmed that 404Media and TechCrunch that, yes, it actually pays Dashers to close the doors of his own driving cars. And it makes sense because, well, nobody would do it if a passenger accidentally left it open.
The Alphabet subsidiary and DoorDash told publications that it is currently running a pilot program in Atlantawhere if one of the vehicle’s doors is left open, nearby Dashers are notified. Waymo’s self-driving cars can’t leave if one of its doors remains open, so the company has framed the program as a way to improve its fleet’s efficiency. Waymo said 404Media that the program began earlier this year and that payments are structured to ensure “competitive and fair compensation for Dashers.”
To be noted, this is not the first time that the two companies have collaborated. By October 2025, Waymo’s self-driving cars became a shipping option for DoorDash customers in Phoenix, Arizona. To get Waymo delivery, customers must choose to “opt in to autonomous delivery” during checkout and physically pick up their order from the trunk of the car when it arrives.
