According to his medical team, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s health worsened after intestinal surgery earlier this month.
The 70-year-old is still in intensive care and will undergo new tests.
Bolsonaro was visited by a court official on Wednesday at the hospital, who gave him a five-day subpoena to raise his initial defense against the coup allegations in preparation for the trial.
Bolsonaro is ordered to be tried, accusing him of commanding alleged right-wing coup Left-wing President Lula Da Silva after he lost his 2022 presidential election.
In the video delivering the subpoena, Bolsonaro’s reaction can be seen, saying, “I have five days to defend?”
In the so-called coup attempt, Bolsenro’s supporters stormed into government buildings. The police investigation outlined allegations that he had conducted personal conversations – including numbers from the armed forces – about the idea of a coup to take power.
His earlier intestinal surgery was targeting ongoing health issues that were stabbed during the 2018 campaign for Minas Gerais in the southeast.
He lost about 40% of his blood and underwent emergency surgery, and the perpetrator later declared mentally unsuitable for trial.
He repeatedly denies coup accusations and accuses his opponents of being political witches.
The day before he was sent by the hospital, he recorded a live YouTube broadcast from the hospital bed with his three sons, although doctors advised not to have visitors.
Brazil’s Supreme Court argued that this showed that he was able to be summoned and notified.
Although running for office is currently banned, Bolsenro has been hoping to run for the presidential election again in 2026, but he could be sentenced to 40 years in prison if convicted.
