Dhoni backed India to defend the trophy

the former India Skipper MS Dhoni says the current team has “everything” to compete T20 World Cup, which starts on Saturday.

India start as favorites given the strength of their line-up and the fact that they are co-hosting the tournament with Sri Lanka.

And Dhoni, who led his country to the title in 2007, is confident that the Suryakumar Yadav-led team is the complete package as they hope to become the first nation to defend the trophy.

“What a good team needs, everything is there,” said Dhoni. “They have experience, especially when it comes to this format, experience is huge. They have played under pressure. Whoever is playing, whatever role they are playing in the team, they have been in that position for a long time.”

Dhoni worried about mist

With the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Yashaswi Jaiswal unable to make it to the XI, India’s depth in this format is scary.

There are things they cannot control, however, the effect of toss and mist that can often affect matches on the sub-continent, helping the chasing teams.

Dhoni added: “What worries me is, again, I hate mist. Mist changes a lot of things. Even when I was playing, what really scared me was mist, where the toss becomes decisive and all that.”

T20 cricket is unpredictable, admits former India captain Dhoni

The only other element that could hamper India’s chances is the nature of T20 cricket – a crash-bang-wallop format that carries an element of risk.

“If we are playing 10 matches against some of the best teams, we will come out as winners more often than not, if the conditions are neutral and all that,” Dhoni said.

“The problem is when some of your players have an off day and one of the opposition has a great day, and that can happen in T20 cricket. So that’s the time – whether it’s in the league stage or the knockout stage, where all the prayers need to be done.

“You know, nobody should get hurt. Whatever roles are given, people have to fulfill their roles for the team. And if that’s the case, I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s one of the most dangerous teams.”

India will begin their campaign against the United States at the weekend.
