David Benavidez only wants to fight the best, and with his star power growing and the WBC light heavyweight world title in hand, he is becoming hard to ignore.
“El Monstro” will move up in weight again this summer to take on Gilberto Ramirez at cruiserweight for the WBO and WBA belts. He then plans to drop down to 175 pounds to face Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev. Both Russians have expressed interest in fighting alongside the 29-year-old pressure fighter.
Despite the big event on the horizon, Benavidez still wasn’t able to secure the signature of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which always annoyed him.
Asked at Project Danza If he feels not fighting Alvarez will leave a hole in his career, Benavidez said yes.
“100 percent. In boxing or any sport, everyone has their nemesis. Canelo is basically my nemesis. That’s what it is. It would be an unfortunate moment in boxing that has never happened. If it doesn’t happen, there’s really nothing I can do.”
Benavidez, who has been working on the fight for years, later admitted that postponing the fight had lost some of its appeal considering Alvarez’s loss to Terrence Crawford last year.
“(Crawford) got a lot out of it. Canelo basically looked invincible when Crawford beat him. If I could get in there and beat him, that would have a bigger impact. Now that Crawford comes in and beats him, you don’t know what’s going to come out of Canelo – if he’s well prepared or if he doesn’t really look hungry.”
While fans and Benavidez have been calling for this fight to happen, Canelo has proven that he will make his own decisions in the sport. With a return date set for September and a shot at one of the previous super middleweight world titles, it’s anyone’s guess whether he’ll risk another move back to light heavyweight.
If he does, he has made it clear Rematch with Dmitry Bivol He ranks higher on his list than fighting Benavidez.
