Daniel Dubois opened the door moments after Alexander Usyk beat Tyson Fury in Riyadh on Saturday night.
Untimely request
Dubois was unhappy and frustrated when he interrupted Usyk’s party and interrupted an interview during his moment of glory after defeating the “Gypsy King” via a 12-round unanimous decision at Kingdom Arena.
IBF heavyweight champion Dubois was allowed into the ring and used the spotlight to demand a rematch with WBA, WBC and WBO champion Usyk (23-0, 12 KOs), who won the title on August 26, 2023. Knocked him out in nine rounds in Wroclaw, Poland.
Dubois could have waited until later to ask Usyk instead of getting in the ring and confronting him. Usyk should have told him to go for a hike, he wants to enjoy the victory and not want anyone to try and provoke.
It would be premature for Dubois to call Usyk into the fight as he still has a chance to defend his title against Joseph Parker on February 22 in Riyadh. He needs to win this fight before he can focus on Usyk.
Usyk stated that he would grant Dubois’ desire for a rematch if Turki Alasheh agreed to compete.
postwar confrontation
Daniel DuBois: “Usyk, I want revenge. Good job tonight. I want revenge for the last robbery. Let’s get it. Let’s go,” Dubois said from inside the car. ringUnified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was called out for his chatterbox shortly after defeating Tyson Fury in Riyadh last Saturday night. “Frank (Warren), make it happen.”
Alexander Usyk: “Your Excellency, let me fight Daniel Dubois. Thank you so much. Yes, no problem. I’m ready. Next fight, no problem.”
A rematch with Anthony Joshua would be more costly for Usyk than a second fight with Dubois, who is not a big star outside of the UK. Either a rematch with Joshua or a trilogy with Fury would be a better fight for Usyk.
