Dan Christian returns to BBL with Sydney Thunder

Australia T20 veteran Dan Christian makes a surprise return to the Big Bash League (BBL) to provide reinforcements for the injury-plagued Sydney Thunder.

The 41-year-old all-rounder, who last played for Sydney Sixers in BBL12, returns to action after a brief hiatus from professional cricket. His return comes at a perfect time for the Thunder, who are dealing with a growing number of injuries to key players.

From coaching role to starting lineup

Christian transitioned into coaching after hanging up his boots and served as an assistant coach for the Thunder. However, a recent spate of injuries has forced the club to require his wealth of experience.

“I made the decision in the off-season that a return to the BBL or any other T20 league was never completely out of the question for me,” Christian said. “The body feels great and I want to make sure I’m ready when the opportunity presents itself.”

His preparation is evident with consistent performances in the NSW Premier Cricket League. While he hasn’t played in a professional game since the Sixers’ semifinal loss to the Brisbane Heat, his fitness levels remain intact.

Thunder roster challenge

Adding to Thunder’s woes is the potential absence of Sam Constace, who could be called up for Test duty. The club also expect international players Sherfane Rutherford and Lockie Ferguson to leave midway through the tournament for ILT20.

“What happened with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was very unfortunate, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity it provided,” Christian said. “I wish them well in their recovery and hope they can return to the park soon.”
