Even so, he remains a progressive tactician whose pressing focus (taken from the German playbook) would see Parish change manager at Selhurst Park without adopting the attacking essence that Glasner has created over the past few years.

The 58-year-old has never had a win-loss ratio below 50% in his eight senior roles, with his record at the Portuguese Eagles just under 70%, and his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation would dovetail with Palace’s system.

Glasner often deployed a three-man defence, and while this did prove successful, it was one of the most controversial line-ups in football, and Schmidt bringing his own style might actually benefit the fluidity of Palace’s system.

While Keane is a promising young coach and a tactical idealist, Schmidt has more experience and playing style that will make him a warm welcome to Crystal Palace supporters.

He demands high-intensity football and therefore requires excellent physical fitness from his players. Glasner Palace averages only 45.1% possession per game this season, but that doesn’t matter. They work hard, they work hard, and at this point, Schmidt really enjoys working with these championship players.

His striker-centric football will bring out the best from forwards such as Ismaila Sarr and Jorgen Strand-Larsen, who joined for a club-record £48m in January.

There is a lot of uncertainty at Crystal Palace right now, and while it would be nice for Glasner to finish the season with more trophies, Parish and Co. do need to plan ahead, and with Schmidt currently unemployed, the pieces could be in place for a new chapter that could be just as successful as the last one.
