Cristiano Ronaldo has backed Ruben Amorim to turn around Manchester United’s fortunes, insisting the “storm will be over” at Old Trafford under his Portuguese compatriot.
Amorim has had a rocky start at United, losing five of his first 10 games in charge since taking over from Erik ten Hag last month.
The 39-year-old even said after the 2-0 defeat at Wolves on Boxing Day – a third consecutive defeat in all competitions – that his job was in jeopardy if United did not find form soon.
“He (Amorim) and my (club) Sporting CP are doing a great job in Portugal,” Ronaldo said at the Globe Football Awards in Dubai, where the Al Nasr striker was named the best player of 2024. Best player in the Middle East.
“But the Premier League is a different beast, the most competitive league in the world.
“I know it’s going to be tough and they’re going to keep storming. But the storm will end and the sun will rise.
“Fingers crossed, he’ll be fine and I wish Manchester United all the best because it’s a club I still love.”
Ronaldo: Manchester United have the same problem
Ronaldo’s second term at Manchester United ends in November 2022 after he gave an explosive TV interview to presenter and journalist Piers Morgan.
United terminated Ronaldo’s contract with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner after he criticized the Glazer family owners, the club’s facilities standards and then-manager Ten Hag.
Ronaldo said: “I said this a year and a half ago and I will continue to say it: the problem is not the coach.
“It’s like an aquarium where the fish gets sick and you take it out to fix the problem.
“If you put it back in the aquarium, it will get sick again. That’s United’s problem. It’s all the same.”
Childhood fan Sir Jim Ratcliffe has taken a stake in Manchester United since Ronaldo left for Saudi Arabia and now owns nearly 29% of the club.
Ratcliffe’s Ineos controls football operations at Old Trafford but fortunes on the pitch have not improved despite winning the FA Cup last season.
Manchester United currently ranks 14th in the Premier League, just 8 points above the relegation zone.
Asked whether the situation at United was the same as when he left, Ronaldo replied: “100 per cent. If I were the owner of the club I would clarify things and adjust what I think is bad there.”
“I’m still young and I have a lot of plans and dreams. Mark my words, I will definitely become the owner of a big club.”
