Crawford backs Stevenson to beat Lopez and prove his claim

Terrence Crawford has no problem with Shakur Stevenson calling himself the best man on the planet. He actually supports this claim. When asked about Stevenson’s boast, Crawford made it clear he agreed. He fully expects Shakur to win uncontested and prove his status against WBO light welterweight king Teofimo Lopez.

“Not at all. He’s the best boxer in the world,” crawford says. “Tomorrow, he’s going to show it. A lot of people can say whatever they want, but tomorrow, Shakur Stevenson is going to win in a huge way.”

This recognition is huge. This also puts Stevenson in a difficult position.

In fact, Stevenson hasn’t looked like a dominant force lately. His performances against William Zepeda, Artem Harutunyan, Edwin de los Santos and Josh Padley didn’t help him establish himself as a top prospect. He won those rounds and stayed safe, but he lacked the authority one would expect from an equal leader. All the old criticisms still exist.

Power is the biggest sticking point. Stevenson was unable to stop his opponent from advancing. He didn’t force them to abandon their game plan or change the intensity of the game. Even his hand speed is controversial. Lopez has been hammering that point all week, calling Stevenson “slow” and claiming that nice moves are no longer a factor once the punches begin.

That’s why Crawford’s words are so important. If Stevenson failed to stand up to Lopez, his claim to the throne would become undefendable. Crawford is awaiting a full statement.

Lopez is a rhythm breaker. He has a history of beating those who should have surpassed him. While he looks easily beatable when his timing isn’t right, he thrives on disrupting fighters who rely on the grind. Stevenson has built his entire career on playing it safe and keeping his distance.

That style faces a huge obstacle against Lopez. Crawford believes Stevenson will clear that up. If he does, the “best in the world” tag will be official. If he fails, everyone will remember those comments for all the wrong reasons.
