Liam Rosenior makes a point of staying off social media. But his family made sure he didn’t miss out on the hilarious memes after spotting them on social media.
Fewer and fewer people in football are immune to meme culture – think of Graham Potter’s face swap earlier this season – but Ronnie Orr’s has quickly taken off.
The new Chelsea manager’s mannerisms, quotes and even his glasses have been the subject of easy ridicule since he first set foot at Stamford Bridge three weeks ago. officeDavid Brent and Will middleman Two more hot shots.
He is aiming for a sixth win in seven games against West Ham United to continue his bright start in west London. sky sports On Saturday, Roniol said the jibes were nonsense but he had spoken to his family about the intense scrutiny of his new job.
“It doesn’t affect me because I’m about three or four years older and I’m not on social media,” he told sky sports. “My kids were so fascinated by it when they saw the funny photos of Will this middlemanOr David Brent, they sent it to me and laughed at me. They love it!
“One time about my dress sense, they said I had a decent dress sense – my daughter thought that was hilarious. She hated my dress sense!
“(The review) does affect your family and I’ve spoken to them just to enjoy what has been an amazing experience for me and hopefully they can see some very special days at this club.
“I don’t think about that. If I thought about what people thought of me or what was said in the media or in the press, I might miss a lot of things here. I have enough work to do here.”
“My motivation is just to make this club as successful as possible and win the next game. All my energy and time is focused on my players, the squad, the way we conduct team meetings and the way we train.
“Everything else is just noise and there’s nothing I can do to affect it – other than winning football games.”
Roniol has enjoyed good results in his first month in the Premier League and scored an important European result in midweek’s 3-2 victory over Napoli, ensuring Chelsea finished in the top eight at the Champions League stage and guaranteed a place in the last 16 in March.
The win was underpinned by a half-time tactical change, with Ronnie Orr initially changing to a back three, which backfired, although the manager believes it was more than just a change to the game plan that sparked their resurgence.
He said: “When you make a decision in football some of it is tactical, 20 per cent, emotional, 20 per cent, energy 20 per cent, opposition systems 20 per cent, there are a lot of factors that go into making that decision.
“I thought we weren’t that far apart in the first half, but we didn’t take care of the ball and our energy level was lower because we were chasing the ball a lot longer than I expected.
“People talk about the tactical changes but the team’s resilience and spirit were contributing factors to the second half performance.”
What Ronniol can’t compete with is the influence of Joao Pedro at Napoli, with the Brazilian striker scoring twice to take his tally to four goals in five games under the new manager.
Since the Chelsea manager arrived at the club’s Cobham training ground as part of a wider open-door policy, he has sought to build an honest and significant relationship with the club’s top goalscorer.
Roniol said: “Everyone will be talking about Joao because of his performance in the last two games, he was outstanding at Crystal Palace and incredible at Napoli.”
“We spend a lot of time getting to know the players and what drives them. Joao and I have had some interesting conversations so far.
“There’s a little friction sometimes and a little love. I need them to tell me the truth and I don’t mind players knocking on my door.
“I want to have a real conversation and it’s not about being best friends. You have to have a level of vulnerability and strength and Joao has shown that in his performance.”
