Paul Merson believes Chelsea are still the same team under Enzo Maresca, but manager Liam Rogniol insists there have been “clear changes”.
Chelsea gave up a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, missing out on a chance to win a fifth straight Premier League game and overtake Manchester United into the top four.
It was the first time Ronnie Orr had dropped points in the league, having won four games previously, with the only defeat coming over two legs in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal, but Merson feels there has been little progress over the past month.
“Chelsea hasn’t changed since Enzo Maresca arrived,” he said. sky sports Expert Merson. “They couldn’t put together a 90-minute show.
“They were good in the first half[against Leeds]like a Harlem basketball team. Palmer, Pedro, Santos, Fernandez – athletic. But all of a sudden they don’t have that experience.
“When the score became 2-1, then 2-2, the next 15 minutes were wasted. No one on them said: ‘Calm down, we’ll have another chance.'”
“The ball fell to Palmer two yards out and he side-footed it over the bar. There was no ball. It happens to the best players. If you ask him to put the ball over the bar, he’s going to find it difficult. It’s exciting.
“Suddenly Chelsea are faced with some very difficult games. It’s going to be a tough game. It’s going to be a real battle. If Chelsea get through the grind and get into the Champions League, I’ll put my hands up and say, ‘Fair play’.”
However, Ronnie Orr believes fifth-placed Chelsea have improved.
“Considering we’ve played 10 games in 30 days, I hope people can already see progress,” he said.
“It’s a definite change and no disrespect to anything that’s happened before. I like to see things change but what I really want to see is getting three points on the board every week.
“To be honest, I don’t remember Leeds having a shot or any moment in the game. Some of the possession we had, our pressing, our energy, that’s what I wanted to see. It makes it harder to swallow that we didn’t win the game.”
Chelsea were unable to regain control of the game after Lucas Nmecha pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, but equalized soon after.
“We have to make sure we take care of our timing and stay professional. I don’t think it’s a reaction to a setback,” Ronniol added.
“There are always times in games when you’re not on top. The funny thing for us was they scored two goals in five minutes.”
Ronniol won 7 of 10 games in charge and scored 24 goals, including 5 goals against Charlton in the FA Cup, but the team only kept 2 clean sheets. In the last home game, the team came back from 2-0 down to defeat West Ham United 3-2, which was very entertaining.
“We played against some very good teams. Leeds are in great form. They are a very good team. We neutralized everything and showed that we can create chances with the ball, which is a very positive thing.”
“It’s a real shame because in six minutes we didn’t take care of two moments and I’m not talking about a really good team performance and win.
“I don’t think it was a tactical or structural issue with this game. I just think we made the wrong decisions at crucial moments. I never blame individuals. It was a team moment.
“I was frustrated after the second goal and I will show the players why the momentum of the game changed. It’s a team thing. If we can focus and stay focused for 90 minutes, this team has incredible potential and you saw that 90 percent of the time in today’s game.”
“I’m a month in. I feel like I already know what we need to do to improve this. It’s making sure we have the time to do it.”
