After the release of GPT-5.2 last weekOpenAI has started launch a new image generation model. The company claims that the updated ChatGPT Images are four times faster than its predecessor. If you’re a regular ChatGPT user, you’ll know that OpenAI servers sometimes take a long time to generate images, especially during peak times and when you’re not paying for ChatGPT Plus. In that regard, any speed improvement is welcome.
The new version is also better at following instructions, including when you want to edit something that has just been created in the new model. You can ask the system to add, subtract, combine, mix and transpose elements. At the same time, OpenAI says that the update offers better text rendering. That’s something many image models have traditionally struggled with, but according to the company, the new ChatGPT Images can handle denser and smaller text. As part of today’s model update, OpenAI has additionally added a dedicated Images section to the ChatGPT sidebar. Here you will find preset filters and prompts that you can look to for inspiration.

The new ChatGPT Images come as Nano Banana Pro is responsible for the surge in the use of Gemini. In October, Google said its chatbot had 650 million users, up from 450 million just a few months earlier in July. Nano Banana Pro has proven to be very popular, the company recently limited free users in just two image generations per day. For OpenAI, a strong response to Nano Banana Pro may not be as important as making sure it comes out facing the Gemini 3 Probut ChatGPT Images are a big part of why there are 800 million users on ChatGPT.
“We believe we’re still at the beginning of what image processing can do,” OpenAI said. “Today’s update is a significant step forward with more to come, from better edits to richer, more detailed outputs across languages.”
OpenAI is rolling out new ChatGPT Images to all users starting today. If you are one of those people who miss GPT-4o, you will be happy to know that you can continue using the old version of the tool through a custom GPT.
