ChatGPT Has Almost 1 Billion Weekly Users, OpenAI Says


The artificial intelligence company OpenAI reports that ChatGPTTHIS AI chatbothas more than 900 million weekly active users, up from 700 million in September. The company also said the service now has more than 50 million consumer subscribers.

The number of weekly users of ChatGPT has doubled since February 2025, when it has 400 million usersand the current 9 million business subscribers is a fourfold increase from September. By comparison, competitor Anthropic said Claude’s free users had grown 60% since January, and its paid subscribers had doubled, though it did not provide numbers.

In January, ChatGPT added something new $8 Go Subscription level, which includes ads, prompts Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad to make fun of it by “pinky promising” not to do the same.

ChatGPT is the most popular chatbot and, with the latest round of investment, its parent company, OpenAI, is now valued at $730 billion, it says.

The development of the chatbot shows how deeply generative AI has penetrated global digital life, making it one of the most rapidly adopted technologies in history. ChatGPT significantly outperforms rivals such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. Such rapid growth has fueled excitement about AI’s potential but also fueled debates about responsible use, including concerns about AI hallucinations.
