Championship promotion race: What impact does the January window have on the Premier League race? |Football News

The January transfer window has closed and the race for the Premier League has begun in earnest.

But what impact does winter business have on the championship promotion race? Do all runners and riders get the players they need, or are they missing?

Let’s take a look…

Coventry manager Frank Lampard celebrates with Southampton fans after Championship game

What do they need?

Frank Lampard repeatedly mentioned their squad’s lack of depth when flying Coventry at the start of the season, and those warnings came during a busy period around December and January. What once looked like an unassailable lead at the top of the table has been reduced to just goal difference.

They need more options in attack, reinforcements in midfield and perhaps an extra centre-back.

Who did they sign?

  • Yang Minhyuk – Winger on loan from Tottenham Hotspur
  • Romain Essé – Winger on loan from Crystal Palace
  • Jahnoah Markelo – winger from Zurich
  • Frank Onyeka – Midfielder on loan from Brentford
  • Yang Minhyuk – Winger on loan from Tottenham Hotspur

Are they doing enough?

While many Coventry fans have been hoping the club would expand and capitalize on its best position in years, overall business has been solid.

For a team that has turned leads into defeats in the past two games, Onyeka could play a vital role in the midfield. While Young hasn’t quite hit the ground running yet, Esse has definitely impressed.

Kim Helberg celebrates his team's 4-1 away win over Hull City

What do they need?

He accepted a bid on deadline day in a bid to retain Hayden Hackney. Maybe add a striker. Overall, the lineup is still very solid.

Who did they sign?

  • Jeremy Sarmiento – Winger from Brighton
  • Leo Castledine – Attacking midfielder from Chelsea
  • Finley Munroe – Defender from Aston Villa
  • Joe Wildsmith – Goalkeeper from West Brom

Are they doing enough?

Yes. There may be some grumbling that another striker might be needed, but overall the team has been strengthened in areas where they were weaker.

Hull City

Sergey Jakirovic replaces Ruben Sellers as Hull City's new manager

What do they need?

Adding some depth in the full-back area wouldn’t hurt, and maybe Oli McBurnie could have some more backup up top.

Who did they sign?

  • Kieran Dowell – Attacking midfielder from Rangers
  • Paddy McNair – Defender from San Diego
  • Yu Hirawka – Forward on loan from Bristol City
  • Toby Collier – Midfielder on loan from Manchester United
  • Lewis Koumas – Winger on loan from Liverpool

Are they doing enough?

Absolutely. Hull City have emerged as unlikely contenders in the promotion race, having performed well in the January loan market. Their roster is much stronger than it was at the beginning of the year.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna during the Sky Bet Championship at St Andrews, Hyde Park, Birmingham.

What do they need?

A striker. George Hurst and Chuba Akpom have struggled in attack this season and could see them slip back into the top two if anyone gives up the chances they create.

Who did they sign?

  • Anis Mehmedi – Attacking midfielder from Bristol City
  • Dan Neal – midfielder from Sunderland

Are they doing enough?

Not exactly. They don’t need a ton of players with the current roster, but the number nine could have been useful, but they didn’t bring one in.

So what about the remaining top six?

millwall The fifth-placed side have added Barry Bannan’s experience in midfield and signed goalkeeper Anthony Patterson and winger Tommy Watson on loan.

Wrexham They weren’t messing around and had fought their way into sixth. Defender Zach Weiner, forwards Davis Keller-Dunn and Bailey Kadamatri signed before the transfer window closed.
