Chael Sonnen says Ilia Topuria could lose the UFC lightweight title due to inactivity and the champ’s current personal issues won’t save him.

Ariel Helwani Sonam discussing the situation on his podcast. MMA reporters asked what to do with the title now that Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje will be fighting for the interim gold.

Sonnen claimed he would handle the situation with caution and brought up a discussion he had with someone at UFC Apex a few weeks ago.

“This is the first person to suggest to me that Ilya should be stripped. I’m a little surprised…their argument is that interim belts are for people who are dealing with illness or injury. If we want to show mercy to an undisputed champion because he’s missing the fight specifically because of illness or injury.”

The retired UFC star then suggested that this was reason enough for Topria to be stripped of his title.

“When Elijah tells us he’s missing a game for any reason other than illness or injury, that’s what you take away from him.”

While Sonnen didn’t like the feeling and felt “cold,” he added that the UFC was right about the champion being stripped of his title if he wasn’t injured or sick.

Sonnen concluded by saying that he doesn’t want him to be stripped away, but believes that should happen given the existing rules:

“I don’t want him to be stripped. I’m on Elijah’s side. I really don’t like what he’s going through. I think he’s sharing more with us than he has to. I also think he’s innocent. He seems like a good guy. I don’t think he’s going to do these things, but, they have to strip him of his clothes. If he doesn’t claim he was injured and have some kind of doctor’s report to back it up, then those reports are probably false and he has to be stripped.”
