The last time the old sides met in the Scottish Premiership, Brendan Rodgers was Celtic’s manager and Russell Martin was Rangers’ manager.
Fast forward to the latest installment of this rivalry and there are two new faces on the touchline, Wilfried Nancy and Danny Rohr ready to go head-to-head.
However, for the first time since the 1993/94 season, both clubs failed to reach the top of Scottish football. Instead, Hearts are three points ahead of the Hoops, while Rangers are three points behind their opponents.
Celtic fans’ patience with Nancy has quickly worn thin, with four defeats in six league games since taking over as interim manager Martin O’Neill a month ago.
Meanwhile, at Ibrox, Rohr’s Rangers side weren’t very entertaining to watch but produced a decent result. In 11 Premier League games, Rangers have won eight, drawn two and lost to leaders Hearts.
As this unpredictable season leads to yet another unpredictable game, here’s what to expect sky sports’ What Chris Sutton and Chris Boyd had to say as they went head-to-head at their former clubs…
Sutton: Nancy Heroes or Zero After Old Firm
Celtic lost 2-0 to Motherwell on Saturday, meaning Nancy’s side once again missed out on an equalizer with leaders Hearts.
The Frenchman has led the club to consecutive wins before Christmas after four defeats in their first four games. However, defeat at Fir Park means rivals Rangers are now within striking distance and can equalize on points with a win at Celtic Park.
“If you think about Wilfred Nancy, the game is either a hero or a zero,” Sutton said. “Some Celtic fans still don’t believe him at all.
“However, if he wins, it’s going to be, ‘We believe in Wilf’. If he loses, it’s going to be, ‘He’s a piece of shit, get him out’.”
“The wild ball is going to continue and he’s going to play like that. The Celtics are going to be vulnerable at times. I just don’t think it’s possible.”
“Rangers will be disciplined against Celtic and I think they will just attack Celtic from behind,” he added warm up.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen on Saturday. Celtic might win 4-1 in 30 minutes, but on the other hand you could see Rangers going in there, playing a good defensive performance and then catching Celtic on the break.
“We’ve definitely gone through a couple of years where you knew Celtic were going to win and it was going to be score-scoring. Now, with the change in management at both clubs and them trying to find a style and a way of playing, I think it’s really interesting.”
Boyd: Rangers not in title race Sutton: Yes, they are!
Rangers are the highest-scoring team in the Scottish League since Rohr took over in October.
Tuesday’s win over St Mirren, combined with leaders Hearts not playing, and Celtic’s defeat at Motherwell have led some fans to believe they are firmly in the title race.
However, Boyd isn’t so convinced, saying: “The problem I have with discussions about the title race when I look at Rangers is that I can still see Hearts and Celtic winning more games than them.
“That’s why I think there’s no way to go back to the past.”
However, Sutton disagreed, adding: “Rangers are still in contention for the title. I know you keep counting them out but they never dropped out of the title race because no one knew what Danny Rohr was up to in January.”
“Also, another reason why Rangers are still in the title race and why they never quit is that this season, unlike previous seasons, we all expected Celtic to win 14 games in a row.
“We can all see Celtic dropping points. We can all see Hearts dropping points.”
