California Sheriff refuses to support ICE actions during Super Bowl LX

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will Super Bowl LX next month in Santa Clara, California, but the county sheriff made it clear he would not support the agency.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Bob Jonsson said Thursday that while authorities are providing assistance to residents and visitors who will be coming into town to watch the game between the two teams, seattle seahawks and the New England Patriots, the department will not support ICE agents in any immigration enforcement operations.

“So I urge our federal partners, if you are planning to do something in our communities, to be transparent and contact local officials so we can do the best we can,” Jonsson said at a news conference.

“It was mentioned that we will not be changing our policies or protocols. We will not be working or supporting ICE Immigration Enforcement, but again I want you to remember that if you see us out there, we are there to help you, and we will be there as well. When these incidents occur, please do not hesitate to contact someone in uniform if they are walking around trying to engage and ensure your safety.”

Jonson also said local law enforcement The safety of residents will be protected at all times.

“We’ll be here waiting for you, shoulder to shoulder. So, when you get off the train, when you get off the bus, yes, you’re likely to see people in uniform. But if they’re not wearing a mask, if they’re wearing tan and green or blue and black, believe me, they’re there to protect you. They’re there to protect you.

“If they’re wearing a mask and trying to hide their identity, then there’s no one communicating with us because we’ve made it clear to our officers that our staff will be engaging this community openly and transparently over the next few weeks and that’s our goal every day. We’ve spent decades doing that. Building this community, building this trust. I’ve talked to a lot of people over the past year to try to give you as much information as possible about what’s going to happen and when it’s going to happen and if it’s going to happen, but we can’t do it without that communication.”

Fox News Digital reached out to ICE for comment.

“The Department of Homeland Security is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the Super Bowl is safe for all participants, just as we do with every major sporting event, including the World Cup,” she said. “Our mission remains unchanged.”

Homeland Security adviser Corey Lewandowski said back in October that law enforcement was “directed by the president” and would not be paused for the Super Bowl.

“There is no place of refuge for people who are in this country illegally,” Lewandowski said. “The Benny Show” podcast. “Not the Super Bowl, not anywhere else. We’re going to find you and deport you. This is a very real situation.”
