AND California a couple was shot and killed while on vacation in Mexicothe authorities confirmed.

The couple, identified by the state attorney’s office only as Gloria A., 50, and Rafael C., 53, were killed in the western state of Michoacan just before midnight Wednesday night.

The couple was traveling in a pick-up truck in Angamacutiro municipality when they were shot. woman died at the scenereports Reuters, while the man died a short time later in hospital.

It was not immediately clear why or if the couple was targeted.

State prosecutors told Reuters that the woman, who has been granted US citizenship, and the man, who was born in the US to Mexican parents, have family and a home in Angamacutir.

Magdalena Guzmán, a press officer at the Michoacán prosecutor’s office, told the New York Times that the couple arrived in Mexico late last month to spend holidays with family.

According to media reports, authorities learned of the attack after security officers found their vehicle riddled with bullets on Angamacutiro Street.

The prosecutor’s office said the couple’s license plate was registered without a number in the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood. Investigators were collecting ballistics evidence from the scene for analysis.

The killing is seen as a step back in the Mexican government’s pledge to crack down on organized crime in several regions.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaumwho took office in October, has vowed nationally to replicate the success she achieved as Mexico City mayor in reducing the murder rate in the sprawling capital.

But her first two months in office were marked by the outbreak of cartel violence in several hotspots.

The Canadian government is advising tourists to avoid non-essential travel to several states in Mexico — including Michoacan — due to high levels of violence and organized crime.
