Brazil’s jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro underwent a second medical procedure in just three days to treat his persistent hiccups.

On Saturday, doctors performed a “phrenic nerve block” on Bolsonaro to block his left phrenic nerve after treating his right phrenic nerve. The phrenic nerve is located in the neck and is essential for controlling the diaphragm (controlling breathing).

The far-right former leader is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup to overturn the 2022 election.

The latest treatment comes after the former president recently underwent surgery due to ongoing health complications.

Dr. Claudio Birolini said Bolsonaro’s “condition is stable” after undergoing a second surgery for chronic hiccups on Monday.

Birolini said he “doesn’t believe the hospital stay will be extended much longer.”

Bolsonaro’s medical team said that if his recovery goes well, he is expected to be discharged from the hospital on January 1.

“It has been nine months of struggle and pain, with hiccups every day,” Bolsonaro’s wife Michelle said on Saturday.

Bolsonaro supports his son Flavio’s bid to run against Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the 2026 presidential election.

Bolsonaro lost the 2022 presidential election to leftist rival Lula.
