Last week, Apple TV revealed that it was looking to double dip THE Cosmere novels. Instead of choosing between film and television, Brandon Sanderson’s fantasy series will divide his time between two mediums, with a Mistborn movie and a Stormlight Archive TV show.
Sanderson recently took to his YouTube channel to shed some light on how the deal came about and what it means for his novels. To his fans, he assured that Mistborn Ghostbloods will be released in 2028 as previously announced, and next Storm light also read on the road.
But he was blunt in saying that the adaptations “will affect my writing schedule, (but) not to the point where I think you should be concerned.
As for TV and movies, Sanderson revealed that he spent years looking for someone to adapt to. Cosmere. This past May, he pitched an adaptation to “all the big streamers and studios (in Hollywood), and I’ve had a lot of great experiences.” They all tried to bid, but Apple won because the meetings went well from start to finish.
There’s also the matter of control: under this deal, Sanderson will write, produce, consult, and approve the cast for Mistborn and storm light, that the Hollywood Reporter The notes give him more control than, say, George RR Martin. He will also co-showrun the show, and the search is on for someone else to help him with that.
But for him, what really sealed the deal was that he liked Apple’s vibe and its streaming approach, including “very carefully launching specific films.” It will be a while before any movie or movie comes out, but he is confident that what he wants will happen and told fans to be careful: “Follow me while I write the screenplay, listen to me moan about how difficult it is to take a book of 200,000 words and condense it into a two-hour movie. That’s our next six months.”
