Chelsea A second comeback in the space of four days as they overcame a two-goal deficit. West Ham 3-2 in a thrilling London derby.

Liam Rosenier made seven changes from the XI that started the game at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, seeing his side come from 2-1 down to beat Napoli 3-2 and move into the top eight of the Champions League table.

That decision seemed to backfire as West Ham took a deserved 2-0 lead through Jared Bowen and Chrysencio Summerville.

Yet Rosenier’s half-time substitutions paid huge dividends, with Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella and Joao Pedro, the scorers who got the decisive strain in Naples, all having a huge impact.

Pedro halved the deficit 12 minutes into the second half, with Cucurella leveling matters 13 minutes later.

West Ham looked to have done enough to at least secure a point, but Enzo Fernandez struck in the 92nd minute to send Chelsea into the match, at least temporarily. Premier League top four.

There was chaos in the final seconds as Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off for West Ham after he grabbed Pedro by the throat amid a scramble. He will miss the next three matches, with the Hammers still five points adrift of safety.

West Ham dominated the first half

Sanchez was left red-faced as he allowed Mark Noble’s apparently innocuous in-swinging delivery to curl into the bottom-left corner and stun Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard then pulled off an incredible save to deny Teti Castellanos after he was played in by Bowen, with West Ham looking dangerous amid poor defending from the hosts.

Chelsea suffered a setback midway through the first half, with Jamie Gittens forced off with an apparent leg injury and replaced by Pedro Neto.

And the Blues’ frustration increased as they fell further behind when Summerville ended West Ham’s brilliant move.

Bowen collected a long ball forward on the right and calmly played in Aaron Wan-Bissaka down the channel, with the defender’s pull-back a first-time whistle from Summerville, leaving Sanchez with no chance.

Chelsea changes pay off

Cucurella, Fofana and Pedro Benoit came on for Badashile, Alejandro Garnacho and Jorel Hato.

Although West Ham started the second half brightly, Sanchez was forced to make saves to deny Mathews Fernandes and Bowen, but the substitute had the desired effect for the Blues.

After Liam Delap went close, Pedro continued his superb recent form, rising at the far post to turn home Fofana’s right-wing cross with a crisp header.

Alphonse Arrola made a superb save to keep out Moises Caicedo’s fierce long-range effort, but the Frenchman could do nothing to prevent Cucurella from equalizing with a diving header.

Neto swung in a deep cross that Malo Gusto headed back towards goal and, after Delap hit the crossbar, Cucurella was on hand to complete the comeback.

From that point on, West Ham were mainly on a mission to ensure a share of the spoils, but they saw a glorious chance to regain the lead begging for it when Jean-Clair Todibo hit the post from point-blank range.

The Hammers were left to miss it as Chelsea’s flat move settled an exciting contest, with Areola having no chance as Fernandez headed home Gusto’s pull-back to send the Stamford Bridge crowd into raptures at half-time.

There was even more drama as Adama Traore tackled Mark Cucurella to the ground by the corner flag, sparking a clash that saw multiple potential red card incidents, although only Todibo was dismissed after a lengthy VAR investigation.

That finish showcased the fight both teams showed in a memorable game. They will each need to continue to show the same spirit, without ill-discipline, in their respective battles at different ends of the table.
