Tremaine “Tremayne” Deon Carroll, 52, who identifies as female, must use she/her pronouns in court, according to a Madera County Court judge’s ruling. ABC30 reports.
Carroll faces two counts of forcible rape and one count of dissuading a witness from testifying.
“After his first inmate became pregnant and was transferred to Los Angeles (a male-only prison), two of his other inmates complained that he raped them,” the Madera County District Attorney said. The inmates came forward with rape accusations,” Sally Moreno told ABC30.

“This person is not a woman in any sense of the word,” Moreno told ABC30.

Deputy District Attorney Eric Dutemple told the outlet the ruling was unfair to Carroll’s victims.

“The committees that review these transfer requests cannot use someone’s criminal record, physical characteristics, sexual orientation, or anything like that,” she continued. “Any factors that you think should be considered before transferring someone to a women’s prison are not allowed and are considered discriminatory.”
In several complaints reported by Reduxx, Carroll used he/him pronouns to refer to herself and did not mention gender identity or sexual orientation until 2021, three months after the Democratic-controlled California Legislature passed SB 132 .

In 1990, Carroll was charged as an adult with three counts of kidnapping for ransom, two counts of robbery and three counts of “forcible oral copulation,” records show. However, some counts were dismissed on technicalities, and the case ended in a hung jury and a mistrial. Rather than undergo a retrial, Carroll pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping and was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison.
Carroll’s third strike under California’s three-strike law came in 1998, when he was the getaway driver in a jewelry store robbery and was eventually sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the three-strike offense. In 1999, while awaiting trial, sheriff’s deputies acting on a tip from a confidential informant discovered he was in possession of a metal wire handle. He will serve until age 25 and will be awarded an additional four-year term.
Carroll committed various serious violations in prison between 2001 and 2015. His crimes reportedly included fighting with other inmates, refusing to obey orders, drug possession, making false reports to peace officers and “conduct likely to result in violence.” Court records. The next year, Carroll was interviewed by MindSiteNews for an article describing him as “an incarcerated transgender woman who has been instrumental in multiple prison lawsuits.” Carroll told the interviewer that he “never felt the need” to identify with anything physically or “put on lipstick or wear tight clothes or try to change my voice” because doing so would “trap me in a box.” .
