Blackburn identify Forest Green Rovers boss Robbie Savage as top manager target

blackburn rangers An early top contender has been picked to replace Valerian Ismail, who was sacked after eight games without a win.

Johnson delighted with Rangers’ much-needed win

Blackburn interim manager Damian Johnson praised his “incredible group of players” after the 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in their first game since Ismail’s departure.

Less than 24 hours after Ismael’s exit was announced by mutual agreement, Rangers face a replay of their league tie with the Owls after a heavy defeat in December, knowing that anything short of a win would see them sink into the relegation zone.

But Eiran Cashin calmed nerves with a close-range cross and Sondre Tronstad’s shot hit the woodwork as Rangers recorded just their third home league win of the season and first of 2026.

Johnson hopes this is a “turning point” for his “amazing” player.

“We all know it’s a big game for us. It’s not an easy 24 hours. It’s not pretty for the players but it’s unbelievable. I thought they were fantastic.

“They did play some good stuff at times but other times they had to put their heads down and show spirit and thankfully we got the three points.

“It’s a lot easier if you can get yourself in front. Ideally you want the second and we were really pushing for it, but when you can’t get it it’s important that you keep them out. They defended well.

“In terms of the mentality, work rate and fighting spirit of the players, I couldn’t ask for more. Hopefully this is a turning point for them because it’s not easy but they are an unbelievable group of players so I’m really happy for them.”

Johnson is not currently involved in the race for the permanent position, with early indications that Carlisle United boss Mark Hughes could be a target.

However, the top contender now is another familiar face.
