How portable do you need? Almost every projector is “portable” to a degree. Many of the projectors in the best projector list, for example, is small enough to fit in a backpack. They might be FILL that backpack, but this is their size. If you want something for the occasional movie night, one of these will be brighter and create a better image. In general, the smaller the projector, the dimmer it is.
How many batteries do you need? Most portable projectors have a battery that lasts about 2 hours. Some, though not all, can extend that by connecting a portable power bank. All battery-powered models can run, usually with greater brightness, when connected to a wall outlet.
What resolution do you need? Most portable projectors are 1080p, or HD, resolution. Only the higher models are 4K and not much. Some are 720p or less. Higher resolution means more visible detail, but also less chance of having the “screen door effect” where you can see individual pixels and it’s like looking at the image through a screen door. However, resolution isn’t everything, especially with portable projectors, as you’re usually producing a smaller image compared to larger projectors. Light output, streaming ability, battery life and overall image quality are more important than resolution.
Does audio quality matter? If you’re hoping to entertain a group of people, you might want to consider a more portable projector with bigger, louder, built-in speakers. Most models also double as Bluetooth speakers, making them even more useful.
How much will you spend? With all portable projectors you pay less, so to speak, compared to less portable “full-size” home projectors. Like, you get lower light and worse image quality but you get a smaller size that in some cases can fit in a pocket. You’re paying for that convenience, in other words.
