Keely Hodgkinson won the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, with runner-up Luke Littler receiving the Youth SPOTY Award.
Hodgkinson completed her rise to athletics superstardom when she won 800m gold for Team GB at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Little started competing in the World Darts Championship last year aged 16 and was beaten in the final at Alexandra Palace, but his success has had an incredible impact on the popularity of the sport.
Joe Root became England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer in October, finishing third. Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were the other finalists in the public vote.
Hodgkinson rose to prominence on the international stage when he won a silver medal in the 800m at the Tokyo Olympics at the age of 19.
At the time, few outside British athletics had heard of her, but those who did knew she was destined for stardom.
She won two world championship silver medals, culminating in victory at the Golden Nights in Paris in early August.
Hodgkinson’s success makes it an unprecedented four consecutive years that the award has been won by a woman, following Mary Earps in 2023, Beth Meade in 2022 and Emma Raducanu in 2021.
Littler enjoyed an exciting year in 2024, winning 10 titles, including his first ranking Grand Slam title in darts, joining only Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright accomplished this feat.
Littler’s meteoric rise has seen him become the face of the sport, with the likes of David Beckham sending him good luck messages as he rose from world youth champion to a central figure in the professional game.
Wigan Warriors named Team of the Year
Super League champions Wigan Warriors have been named Team of the Year after winning four trophies in a historic 2024 campaign.
The Warriors started the season by winning the World Club Challenge, beating Australia’s three-time NRL champions Penrith Panthers.
They went on to win the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield, beating Hull KR in the Grand Final at Old Trafford in October.
This is the third time in the history of the award that a rugby league club has won the award, following Wigan in 1994 and St Helens in 2006.
