Freddy Schott won a thrilling Bahrain Championship, beating Patrick Reed and Calum Hill in a three-way play-off.
Short, whose victory on Sunday was his first on the DP World Tour, trailed leader Hill by two strokes entering the final round, but a roller coaster ride on the final day culminated in a playoff in which Reed and Hill fell.
Reed took the lead after a birdie hat trick on the back nine, but a bogey on No. 16 cost him dearly when he found a bunker on the tee of the first extra hole.
The American announced his departure from LIV Golf last week and returned to the PGA Tour, but he was unable to recover from his mistake as he bogeyed the hole while his play-off opponent shot par.
More drama followed, however, when Hill’s tee shot on the second extra hole went left and out of bounds. He then found the water while Short kept his composure, so Hill conceded the hole – an unusual sight in a playoff – giving the 24-year-old Short a breakout victory.
“It’s so amazing. I don’t realize anything yet. I’m just so happy and surprised. I don’t know what’s going on right now!” Short said.
“I just stayed in the moment and hit the ball as hard as I could. I’m speechless. I could have done it the regular way, but it was more special this way.”
