Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre etched his name in the history books on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player to score more than 150 runs in A-grade cricket. The 17-year-old prodigy achieved the feat in one competition Vijay Hazare Trophy Against Nagaland, surpassing the previous record set by an Indian batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Mhatre was only 17 years and 168 days old, surpassing Jaiswal’s age of 17 years and 291 days. Jaiswal set this record back in 2019 while representing Mumbai against Jharkhand. Mhat smashed a staggering 181 off 117 balls, including 15 fours and 11 towering sixes, to take Mumbai to 403 for 7 in 50 overs .
Villar’s rising star
Born and raised in the Mumbai suburb of Viral, Mhat has been a rising star since making his debut for the domestic giants earlier this season. His consistent performance in various formats has made him a mainstay of the team.
He was part of the Mumbai team that won the Iran Cup, beating the rest of India in October to end a 27-year drought. On his Ranji Trophy debut, Mhatt showed his potential with a solid 52 off 71 balls, although Mumbai lost the opener against Baroda.
Giving impetus to domestic cricket
Mhat’s season was filled with talent and toughness. After making his debut, he scored a match-winning 176 against Maharashtra, an innings that included 22 fours and four sixes. Thanks to his heroics, Mumbai won comfortably by nine wickets.
Although Mhat had mediocre performances against Tripura and Odisha, he hit his second first-class hundred against Services, scoring 116 runs off 149 balls. This knock cemented his status as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket.
Shining on the international stage
Mhat’s performances earned him a spot in the India U-19 national team asian cup. He contributed over fifty against Japan and UAE but failed to do so in the final as India lost to Bangladesh. His performance showcased his ability to handle pressure on the international stage.
After missing Mumbai Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy After winning the title, Maitre returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy in style. His fluent 78 in the high-scoring match against Karnataka further highlighted his ability in the 50-over format.
