Australia’s top-order batting found its rhythm on Boxing Day, ensuring the hosts took early honors in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). On a day when the Australian batsmen used a strong pitch and won their first toss of the series, the hosts scored a mammoth 311/6. Contributions from Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith laid the foundation, though India’s bowlers made timely breakthroughs to keep them in the game.
A sparkling debut by Sam Constas
Australia’s decision to debut 19-year-old Sam Konstas was a masterstroke. Tasked with facing Jasprit Bumrah, Constance showed daring strokeplay disrupting the Indian bowling plans. The debutant got off to a tentative start, getting beaten a few times by Bumrah, but his fearless approach soon paid dividends. Konstas unleashed a series of reverse scoops, hit a boundary and even hit Bumrah for a six – his first in Tests since 2021.
Constance scored an impressive half-century in just 52 balls, becoming Australia’s second youngest Test half-century. His aggressive knock of 60 set the tone for the innings before Ravindra Jadeja broke his opening stand of 89 by trapping him LBW.

Middle order grit
Constas sets the stage, Khawaja and Labuschen were built on the platform With continued contribution. Khawaja, under pressure, scored his first half-century after a quiet series, while Labusche continued his fine run with a well-coordinated 72. The pair faced a disciplined spell from Akash Deep and Bumrah, who kept the scoring rate in check. Subdued second session.
India’s persistence paid off when Bumrah dismissed Khawaja for 56, mis-pulled to midwicket. The dismissal brought Steve Smith to the crease, and he, along with Labuschagne, took advantage of the aging ball to rebuild the innings.
Late burst from Bumrah
India clawed their way back into the game in the final session. Washington Sundar gave Virat Kohli a share of the Lebuschn with a sharp catch, and Bumrah followed up with a double strike. He bowled Travis Head for a wicket and dismissed Mitchell Marsh cheaply to push Australia to 246/5.
Smith’s resilience, however, proved crucial. The experienced batsman showed his prowess with controlled aggression, especially against Jadeja. Smith found an able partner in Alex CareyAnd their 53-run partnership steadied the ship before Kerry fell to Akash Deep under the lights. Smith remained unbeaten on 68, guiding Australia to stumps along with captain Pat Cummins.
India’s bowlers battle
Despite conceding 311 runs, India’s bowlers gave a strong performance. Bumrah was a standout performer with figures of 3-75, including a crucial late wicket. Akash Deep, despite being wicketless for most of the day, bowled tirelessly and deserved his final scalp of the mango.
The day ended with Australia slightly ahead, but the pitch offered little help to the bowlers and India’s batting depth kept the Test balanced.
