Athletics Chairman Dave Kaval resigned after serving as the public face of the organization’s move from Oakland to Las Vegas.

Kaval, 49, serves as seventh president of The Athletic 123 years of historyand has held this position for the past eight years.

A’s owner John Fisher said in a statement: “We are grateful for Dave’s contributions and leadership over the past eight years. He has led our organization through an important period of transition and we sincerely thank him for his impact on the ball. The team’s unwavering commitment.”

“As we look toward the next chapter for our franchise, this team will continue to grow under new leadership, driving the organization’s success during the transition period in its new home in West Sacramento and Las Vegas.”

Kaval will resign from his position on December 31 to pursue new business opportunities in California. Sandy Dean will serve as interim president and a search for a full-time position will begin in 2025.

Dean is a long-time business partner of the Fisher family.

Kaval resigned after the team cleared the last major hurdle to build a stadium in Las Vegas despite It was strongly opposed by fans.

The Las Vegas Stadium Authority in early December approved lease, non-relocation and development documents for the Athletics to build a $1.75 billion stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas could break ground on a new stadium in the spring to be ready for the start of the 2028 season.

Kaval unsuccessfully attempted to build a stadium in downtown Auckland. He then reached a deal to move the team out of the city, ending his 57-year coaching career.

The Athletics will play at a minor league ballpark in West Sacramento, Calif., for at least the next three seasons.
