Search and rescue operations continue after an Indian warship rammed into a passenger ship carrying more than 100 passengers.

An Indian warship collided with a passenger ship off the coast of the financial capital Mumbai and capsized, killing at least 13 people, officials said.

More than 100 people have been rescued, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday.

The navy said search and rescue efforts were continuing.

“An Indian Navy ship lost control due to engine failure while conducting engine testing in the Mumbai port. As a result, the ship collided with a passenger ship and subsequently capsized,” the Navy said in a statement

“I pay my heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives in this accident,” Fadnavis said, adding that “we share the grief of their families.”

The Navy said the 13 dead included a Navy service member and two representatives of equipment manufacturers who participated in the tests.

Local TV channels showed the accident occurred when a boat carrying at least five people hit the passenger bus.

“The speedboat hit our boat and water started entering our boat and then the boat capsized. The driver asked us to put on life jackets,” a passenger on the boat told ABP Majha news channel.

“I swam for 15 minutes and was rescued by another boat,” said the passenger, who asked not to be named.

“The boat disaster in Mumbai is sad. Condolences to the family of the deceased,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X on Wednesday evening.

Modi also announced an ex-gratia payment of 200,000 rupees ($2,356.63) from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the next of kin of each person killed in the shipwreck, and 50,000 rupees for the injured.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said the private passenger boat, the Neelkamal, was heading towards Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination off the coast of Mumbai, when it capsized.

Built in the fifth and sixth centuries AD, the caves are a UNESCO heritage site and receive a steady stream of visitors year-round.

Boats departing from Mumbai’s southernmost Gate of India regularly transport tourists to attractions an hour away.
