In a BCCI tribute video, Ashwin recalled the emotional moments that shaped his determination. “To be honest, I guess I don’t know where to start. I made a promise to myself in 2012. We lost the series Englanda difficult question. It was early in my career and I just told myself, we’re not going to lose another guy again, that’s what I promised myself. How many wickets you took, how many hours you ran, you won’t remember them after ten years. What matters is memory,” Ashwin said in a video released by BCCI.

Ashwin promises to never let India lose home Test series

Under his influence, India won 18 consecutive home Test series over the next 11 years, setting a world record. During this period, Ashwin played a key role and performed well by grabbing 320 wickets in 53 home games.

Ashwin ended his illustrious Test career with 537 wickets in 106 matches, becoming India’s second-highest wicket-taker. He has scored over 1,500 runs, including three centuries with his impressive batting.

Looking back on his journey, Ashwin expressed his gratitude. “But if someone had told me in 2011 that I would get so many wickets, I would have retired on December 18, 2024. I wouldn’t have believed them because I know this is the game I love, but I’m from I didn’t expect that I would get so much love, so many wickets and so many runs. I am so happy and so grateful to everyone who supported me and challenged me. Thank you so much.” he added.

Notably, Ashwin won the Man of the Series award 11 times, equaling Muttiah Muralitharan’s all-time record in Test cricket. His match-winning performances cemented his status as one of the greatest all-rounders in Indian history.
