Tottenham had to work incredibly hard for their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup as they needed extra time to beat Tamworth 3-0 on Sunday.
A rare National League Vs Premier League The duel was delayed as a result of a problem with one of the Tamworth nets, but the contest resumed soon after the scheduled kick-off time thanks to some humble cellotape and stellar DIY work from Tamworth winger Beck-Ray Anoru.
Perhaps buoyed by his stellar pre-match antics, Enoru was the brightest spark in the opening exchanges and took no time in defending Antonin Kinski. Tamworth obliged Spurs A corner inside five minutes and one of Tommy Tonks’ infamous long throws to be saved as the Premier League visitors struggled to adapt to the foreign surface.
Tottenham eventually took control and offered serious quality in the middle of the park through James Maddison and Yves Bissauma, but their work in the final third left much to be desired. Jas Singh between the Tamworth sticks was only tested on two occasions in the first half, both through Maddison’s efforts.
The hosts ticked off another milestone reaching the hour mark at 0-0. Singh was in denial Madison Again early in the second half, the German missed a golden chance one-on-one with the Tamworth goalkeeper before Hayden Hollis expertly denied Time Werner off the line.
Nana felt he was entering the final act of the game, but they stayed well in the contest as Postecoglou turned to his bench to avoid extra time. However, the arrival of Dominic Solanke and Wednesday night hero Lucas Bergvall Failed to facilitate an early goal which meant Spurs were forced into 30 extra minutes just days before the North London derby.
Surviving a few late scares in stoppage time, Tottenham finally broke the deadlock on 100 minutes. Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson clinically confirmed Spurs’ place in the fourth round before a smart Pedro Porro free-kick cruelly netted Nathan Shikuna.
